1926 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-101, DDO-002 of the 1926 Buffalo Nickel is cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-107 (DMR-004) and displays a medium spread on LIBERTY with light spread on the upper hair of the Native American portrait. The FS-101 designation signals mainstream collectibility — this is one of the most recognized Buffalo Nickel varieties for the date. Notably, the reverse die paired with this obverse is listed as DDR-002, carrying a combined FS-101/801 attribution, meaning both the obverse and reverse of this die pairing exhibit hub doubling — a relatively uncommon dual-variety combination. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state where the reverse already shows DDR-002 characteristics, Stage B at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state. James Earle Fraser's bold Native American portrait provides excellent surfaces for registering the medium spread on LIBERTY, which runs along the obverse rim, while the light spread in the upper hair detail requires more careful examination. Collectors should note that the dual DDO/DDR attribution on a single die pair elevates this variety's significance considerably.
