Description

This variety has been eliminated from the active VAM catalog. Removed in December 2022 as a duplicate of VAM-1AN, the 1921-S VAM-1AZ was originally classified as 1AZ IV 1 - D2a with the label "Scribbling Die Scratches #9" and carried a rarity rating of 189 with scarcity ratings of I-2 R-5. The Reverse D2a die showed fine die scratches in various directions on over-polished tail feathers around the eagle's right leg and between the eagle's left wing and body. A small die chip on the fourth outer feather from the bottom of the eagle's right wing served as the primary reverse die marker. When additional study revealed this die pair to be identical to the one already cataloged as VAM-1AN, the duplicate entry was retired from the active listings. Collectors who previously attributed coins to VAM-1AZ should reclassify them as VAM-1AN for accurate record-keeping. The elimination underscores the self-correcting nature of the VAM cataloging process, where ongoing research continuously refines the reference and removes redundancies.
