Description
The 1921 Pilgrim Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 20,053, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Authorized to mark the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims' landing at Plymouth Rock in 1620. The obverse features governor William Bradford standing in full Pilgrim attire, holding a Bible, while the reverse displays the Mayflower under full sail. Designed by Cyrus E. Dallin. The 1921 re-issue, distinguished by the addition of the date on the obverse, had a much lower mintage of just 20,053 pieces and is significantly scarcer. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9360. The 1920 issue is relatively common among classic commemoratives, but the 1921 version with the added date had a much lower mintage and commands a premium. Together they represent an important chapter in early American history.
