Description

The 1936 (S) Texas Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. With a mintage of just 9,055, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. Authorized in 1934 to celebrate the centennial of Texas independence from Mexico in 1836. The obverse features an eagle perched on a large five-pointed star with a small winged figure of Victory at the top, surrounded by portraits of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, while the reverse displays the Alamo mission in San Antonio, with the winged figure of Liberty kneeling before it. Designed by Pompeo Coppini. Continued PDS production, with each mint typically producing around 9,000-10,000 pieces. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9388. The Texas Centennial Half Dollar is one of the most popular multi-year commemorative programs, with PDS mint sets from each year creating a challenging complete collection. The Alamo reverse and dual-portrait obverse make it among the most detailed designs in the series.
