About This Coin

The 1920 Indian Head Eagle is a United States Gold Eagle from the Indian Head Eagles 1907-1933 series — 11th of 15 years in the series. In 1920, coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint with a combined mintage of 126,500. This represents the second-lowest annual mintage in the series, below the series median of 586,695. The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered war bonnet, facing left and the reverse displays a standing eagle with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1920-S is a major rarity — most of the 126,500 mintage was melted. Fewer than 50 are believed to survive. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a raised stars edge. Produced 10 years before the celebrated 1930 key date. Across its variants, estimated values range from $28K to $133K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $1725K in MS67 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens.
