Not every one of Thomas L. Elder's medals was struck in metal: HK-448 is made of brownish red fiber, a material the listing gives for this design alone. It carries the same dies as the metal versions of his 1917 Veteran Corps of Artillery medal, 38 mm, DeLorey 95. The obverse is the Confederation altar and all-seeing eye from the forty-dollar notes of the Continental Congress. The reverse says the corps acted as guard of honor at City Hall in New York to the French officials under Joffre on May 9 and the English officials under Balfour on May 11, 1917. Elder, then 40, had joined the corps as soon as the United States declared war. Fiber sits in the listing between aluminum (HK-447) and oreide (HK-448a).
