Description

Twelve documented doubled die reverses for the inaugural year of the Lincoln Cent speak to the depth of research devoted to this cornerstone date, and DDR-012 adds a notable wrinkle: it appears on the VDB parent but carries the No V.D.B. reverse die variety RDV-003. Victor David Brenner's initials were removed from the reverse partway through 1909 production after public criticism, and RDV-003 represents one of the dies produced after that removal. The doubling manifests as extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, both wheat ears and stems, and OF AMERICA — broad coverage across multiple reverse elements. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-3407 with die marker reference DMR-021, three die states are documented. Stage B shows a die scratch running north from the lower right side of the E in CENT at early-to-middle die state. The combination of a first-year-of-issue date, the historically significant VDB controversy, and a well-documented doubled die reverse makes this variety a compelling study in early Lincoln Cent die production, where the Mint was still refining processes for what would become America's longest-running coin design.
