1909 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-2513 and DMR-013, the 1909 DDR-006 Lincoln Wheat Cent presents light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, both wheat ears, stems, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — a broad distribution of doubling affecting nearly every major reverse design element. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early-to-mid-die-state features a small die gouge line in the upper A of STATES and a small die gouge dot between the upper IB of LIBERTY (early die state). Stage B at mid-die-state shows a die crack from the right wheat grains to the rim at approximately K-3:30 and a very light die crack across the bust. Stage C at late die state is unconfirmed. This die uses the RDV-003 reverse design variant (No V.D.B.) — one of the standard reverse die varieties for the inaugural 1909 Lincoln Cent, produced after Victor David Brenner's initials were removed from the reverse following public controversy over their prominent placement. The 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams at 19 mm diameter with a plain edge. As a first-year-of-issue variety, DDR-006 holds heightened significance for collectors assembling comprehensive 1909 Lincoln Cent variety sets — the debut year that introduced Brenner's portrait which remains in use over a century later.
