1909 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

The inaugural year of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Wheat Cent holds special significance for variety collectors, and DDR-003 adds to the 1909's rich variety landscape. This doubled die reverse displays medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the upper wheat tips, and the stems — areas where even moderate hub displacement produces detectable doubling on the reverse's relatively delicate design elements. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-1215 with die marriage DMR-010, both obverse and reverse appear in early die state, with mid and late states unconfirmed. The reverse is identified as RDV-003, the No V.D.B. variant — indicating this die was used after the Mint removed Brenner's prominent initials from the reverse following public controversy during the first days of production. The 1909 Lincoln Cent without V.D.B. continued in large-quantity production after the initial V.D.B. issue was halted, and doubled die varieties from this no-initials reverse form an important subset of first-year Lincoln varieties.
