Description

The 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-016, attributed by the Wexler team and cross-referenced as CONECA 7-R-II-C+VI, shows a Class II spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the decorative dots flanking the motto, and the wheat ears. A slight doubling is also visible on USA of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and on the wheat stems. Obverse die markers are present and serve as additional attribution points. The 1909 Lincoln Cent holds a unique place in American coinage as the inaugural year of the Lincoln design, introduced to mark the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Victor David Brenner's portrait replaced the Indian Head design that had circulated since 1859. WDDR-016 falls within the extensive Wexler doubled die catalog for 1909, a year that generated numerous die variety attributions across both the VDB and No-VDB obverse dies. The CONECA 7-R-II-C+VI designation confirms the Class II nature of the reverse doubling and aligns with the Wexler WDDR-016 listing. Wexler Variety ID: 1909 1¢ WDDR-016. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge (dot) shows in the field by the vest just to the SW of the bottom of the 1 in the date. Reverse: A die scratch runs west to east inside the lower O of ONE. Another die scratch extends west from the lower left side of the O in ONE. Numerous west to east die scratches can be found on both sides of the C in CENT.
