Description

Leonard Hinckley discovered this San Francisco Morgan Dollar variety in February 1974. Cataloged as VAM-4, classified III2 1, C4b (S Tilted Left) (189), the reverse features a type V S mint mark that is centered but tilted to the left. This variety carries two important corrections to its official listing that collectors should be aware of: although listed as having a normal date, the variety actually has a near date, with the digits positioned closer to the rim than standard placement. Additionally, while the listing describes a C4 reverse, the reverse actually displays characteristics of both C3 and C4 types, making it more accurately a C3/C4 reverse. These corrections reflect the ongoing refinement inherent in the VAM cataloging process, where initial attributions are sometimes revised as additional specimens are studied and compared.
