Description

Martin Field's March 1981 discovery, the 1902 San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-7 is classified as 7 III2 6 C4/C3d (Near Date, Doubled Profile, 2 Olive Reverse) with die pair 189. Struck in 90% silver, the obverse features a near date position with slight doubling visible on Liberty's profile, where a secondary hub impression displaced facial contour elements. The reverse presents the variety's most distinctive diagnostic: an extra olive to the right of the existing olive on the branch, creating the 2 Olive Reverse designation. This supernumerary olive, connected to the branch, results from hub displacement that duplicated the fruit element. The base of the numeral 2 in the date appears filled in on later die state specimens but remains open on early die state examples, documenting progressive die deterioration.
