Description

Discovered by Jim Baxter in March 1979, the 1902-P Morgan Dollar VAM-9 is classified as III2 5, C4/C3d reverse, die pair 189 (Near Date, Doubled 1, 2 Olive Reverse). The obverse shows the 1 doubled below the crossbar, with the date set further left than normal. The reverse is particularly notable for an extra olive to the right of the olive connected to the branch, along with doubling on the top of the olive branch at the base of the leaves. Additionally, UNITED STATE OF is doubled towards the rim. The C4/C3d dual reverse classification indicates two distinct types of reverse characteristics coexisting on the same die. The extra olive is the most visually distinctive reverse feature, as additional design elements created by doubling are more immediately noticeable than shifted lettering. Collectors should examine both the branch area and the upper legend for complete diagnostic confirmation.
