Description

Brian Haight's 2017 discovery of the 1902 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar VAM-29 revealed a multi-feature variety combining a doubled ear on Liberty's portrait, a slanted date, and doubled reverse lettering. The slanted date indicates the logotype punch was applied at an angle, tilting the baseline away from horizontal. The ear doubling manifests as a secondary outline tracing the ear's interior, a diagnostic observed under moderate magnification. On the reverse, hub doubling affects the legend through the C4 reverse hub — catalog notes record this as the VAM-22 C3 reverse, though the C3 is actually a documented typographical error for C4, an important distinction for researchers. Philadelphia struck 7,994,000 Morgan Dollars in 1902, the penultimate year of the series' initial production run before the 1904 hiatus.
