1902-P VAM-28

Description

Discovered in 2015 by Algot Stephenson, this Philadelphia Mint 1902 Morgan Dollar is attributed as VAM-28 with die pair III2 17 and reverse C4i. The obverse carries a date in normal lateral position set low and slanted with the 1 closer to the rim than the 2. Slight doubling appears on the profile from the hair down to the upper neck edge, along with slight doubling of the ear at the right inside and earlobe plus hair edge above the ear. The doubled ear and profile represent an unusual doubling location distinguishing this from the more common date-focused doubled die Morgan varieties. The reverse exhibits hub doubling consistent with the VAM-22 C4 reverse but from a different die, classified as C4i. No useful die markers are apparent on slightly worn specimens, making late die state attribution more challenging. The 1902-P was struck during the Progressive Era at Philadelphia, and doubled ear and profile varieties require careful examination under magnification. The low slanted date combined with the doubled ear provides the primary attribution pathway, as reverse die markers are less reliable on circulated specimens.
