Error
Description
Discovered by Brian Raines in July 2008 and catalogued as 29A III2 16 C4/C3n, the 1902-O Morgan Dollar VAM-29A is titled "Doubled Ear, 2 Olive Reverse, Clashed n & st" — a compound variety exhibiting hub doubling, a reverse die anomaly, and die clash evidence. The obverse (III2 16) is a clashed die: a partial incuse impression of the n from "In" appears adjacent to Liberty's neck, and a partial incuse impression of "st" from "Trust" is visible in the right hair vee at the lower hair edge. Both were transferred from the reverse during a clash event without a planchet. The reverse (C4/C3n) features the 2 Olive configuration, in which an extra olive appears adjacent to the main olive on the branch. An important die relationship: VAM-29A and VAM-29 share the exact same die pair, making them siblings from a single marriage. The 1902-O Morgan Dollar is available in circulated grades, and compound varieties combining doubling, clash marks, and die anomalies are among the most actively sought attributions for specialists. The multi-characteristic nature of VAM-29A rewards systematic examination of both sides.
