Description

Combining doubled profile and reverse legend features with a prominent die scratch on the reverse wreath, this 1902-O New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-14A dates from one of the final years of original Morgan Dollar production. A long vertical die scratch runs through the middle of the top two leaf clusters of the left wreath, providing an immediately visible attribution marker on the reverse. Classified as 14A III28-C3i (181), this variety shares its obverse die with VAM-14 but pairs with a different reverse die — a die marriage distinction that is fundamental to VAM attribution, where each unique obverse-reverse combination receives its own catalog entry. The doubled profile indicates hub displacement affected Liberty's facial contours on the obverse, while the doubled reverse legend shows the same misalignment event extended across the die face to impact the lettering. Morgan Dollar production at New Orleans continued through 1904, and the 1902-O date produced numerous identifiable die pairs as the Mint worked through its final years of silver dollar coinage.
