Description
This 1899 Indian Head cent exhibits a distinctive die clash on the reverse where the front portrait of Liberty is clashed twice and the bottom feather gap is clashed at the top inside of the right wreath. The double clashing indicates the dies struck each other without a planchet between them on at least two separate occasions, with each impact transferring the obverse portrait elements onto the reverse die at slightly different positions — creating a doubled ghost image of Liberty's profile within the wreath area. This overlay of two separate clash impressions produces a more complex and visually dramatic pattern than a single clash event. Critically, this variety originates from a different die pair than the other known 1899 die clash which shows the portrait and feathers clashed inside the left wreath rather than the right, demonstrating that multiple die pairs experienced clashing events during the year's production run at the Philadelphia Mint. The Indian Head cent, designed by James Barton Longacre and produced from 1859 through 1909, was struck in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Longacre's obverse features Liberty wearing a feathered Native American headdress, with the bold facial profile — forehead, nose, chin — creating particularly recognizable clash signatures when transferred to the reverse die. The wreath reverse provides the receiving surface for these clashed portrait elements, and the location within the right wreath versus left wreath serves as the primary differentiator between this variety and the other 1899 clash. Die clashes were not uncommon in late 19th-century coinage production, as the high-speed mechanical presses could occasionally cycle without a planchet properly positioned between the dies, but double clashing from two separate events on a single die pair is notably less common.
