At the threshold of the twentieth century, the 1899 Indian Head Cent carrying cud CU-1c-1899-01 was among the last issues of a series that would be replaced by Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Cent just ten years later. The 1899 date recorded a mintage of approximately 53.6 million pieces, one of the highest annual outputs in the Indian Head series, as Philadelphia supplied a national economy that had recovered from the depression of the 1890s and was entering sustained growth. The rim cud formed through die rim fracture, where repeated striking stress caused a segment of the die's edge to break away, leaving a void that filled with planchet metal and produced the characteristic raised, featureless mass at the coin's periphery. As the sole cataloged cud for 1899, CU-1c-1899-01 may represent either an infrequent failure or an underreported variety on a high-mintage date.
