1898 Repunched Date WRPD-001

Description

The first entry in the Wexler Repunched Date Files for 1898 dimes, WRPD-001 documents an 1/1898/8 sequence on a Barber Dime struck in 90% silver. Designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and produced from 1892 through 1916, with dates entered into dies individually by hand, the Barber Dime series offers a rich variety landscape. The repunch places the 1 displaced south and the last 8 displaced north of their final positions. Obverse die markers are extensive: a die crack extending east from the front tip of the bust; a strong east-west die scratch on the forehead; strong northwest-southeast die scratches behind the ear; a small die gouge between the ends of the ribbon; a die gouge at the rim above the right side of the T in UNITED; and a die gouge at the rim above the RI in AMERICA. On the reverse, a northwest-southeast die scratch crosses above the right oak leaves, and strong northwest-southeast die scratches run through the lower right wheat grains. The opposing-direction repunching on the 1 and final 8, combined with eight distinct die markers, makes WRPD-001 one of the most thoroughly documented Barber Dime varieties.
