1897-O VAM-18A
Error
Description
Discovered in 2019 by the collector known as LateDateMorganGuy and renumbered as VAM-18A in May 2023, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is cataloged under classification III2 11 with a C3k reverse, titled Near Date, High O Tilted Right, Die Breaks above Cap and 6-7 Left Stars, carrying a rarity rating of 180. The obverse exhibits a die crack in the field above the top of the Phrygian cap with a displaced field break, and another die crack runs through the left stars to the E-P area with a slight slant of displaced field break at stars six through seven. Die polishing lines in the TY of LIBERTY serve as the obverse die marker. On the reverse, die polishing lines in the wing-neck gap mark the die, and the die pair index score is RE2/C4. Late-date New Orleans Morgans from the 1890s are avidly collected, and the combination of displaced field breaks near the cap and through the left star cluster creates a visually dramatic crack pattern that distinguishes this variety from other 1897-O near-date listings.
