Description

Carrying the coveted WOW! MORGAN VAM designation, the 1897-O Morgan Dollar VAM-6A is among the most visually spectacular die break varieties in the series. The full classification is VAM-6A III23 · C3e: Near Date, High O Tilted Right, Die Break Left Reverse Star. The reverse die displays two dramatic break events: a die crack runs through the tops of UNITE and descends to the left star, widening into a displaced field area. A second crack runs from the right wreath through the top of the O and bottom of the D in DOLLAR, with an additional break below the D. These two die break events define the WOW! designation. Discovered by Michael Fey in July 2005, VAM-6A is cataloged within the Near Date, High O Tilted Right die pairing framework shared with VAM-6. Struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design, VAM-6A's dual die breaks and WOW! status place it among the elite die break listings in the Van Allen-Mallis classification system.
