1896 Bryan Dollar HK-785, Spaulding & Co., S-16
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Spaulding & Co. put its own name on a version of the September 1896 silver statement. HK-785 (Schornstein 16) sets out, in nine lines with only the first curved, the same sums Gorham used, the regular dollar's 412 1/2 grains against this piece's 823, the larger quantity being equal to one gold dollar, followed by Sept. 16th 1896 and Spaulding & Co. The reverse is the cartwheel Gorham used on HK-780. There is no rim on either side. Hibler and Kappen place the piece among silver medals Eastern firms made for the races of 1896 and 1900, more restrained than the satirical base-metal pieces aimed at Bryan, and tied directly to the coinage question. Struck in silver, 52 mm. A one-sided version is HK-786.
