1896 Bryan Dollar HK-1010, Jaccard, S-4
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
E. Jaccard & Co., a jewelry firm in St. Louis, Missouri, issued this one-sided silver piece, which Hibler and Kappen think Tiffany & Co. probably made. HK-1010 (Schornstein 4) repeats the July 1896 statement of HK-777, its claim that 776 1/3 grains equaled a gold dollar, set in seven straight lines, but the letters are cut in a different style and the edge carries no name at all. It measures 52 mm, larger than the 49 mm Tiffany pieces. Like the other silver pieces of the 1896 campaign, it turned the free-silver debate into a physical comparison, showing how much silver it took to equal a gold dollar at the market rate of the day.
