1896 Bryan Dollar HK-781, Gorham, S-7 Uniface
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Only the lettered side of Gorham's September 1896 design appears on HK-781 (Schornstein 7); the back is left blank. Its nine lines, curved at top and bottom, set the 412 1/2 grains in a government dollar against the 823 grains in this piece, which the text calls the equivalent of one gold dollar, then give the date Sept. 16th 1896 and the maker, Gorham Mfg. Co., Silversmiths. There is no rim. The same face served HK-780, which adds a cartwheel reverse, and it was later altered for the George H. Ford pieces HK-1012 and HK-1012a, on which the last line was polished away and Ford's name added in incuse letters. Silver, 52 mm. It belongs to the year Bryan first ran on free silver.
