Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Tiffany & Co. signed this two-sided silver piece in a curved line near the bottom rim of its reverse. HK-779 (Schornstein 3) is 52 mm across and dated Sept 14 1896 in the last of seven straight lines on the obverse, which declares 823 grains of silver, nine parts pure in ten, equal to a gold dollar. On the reverse a broad flat circle springs from the rim at the top, and inside it six lines identify it as the size of a regular government dollar, which held 412 1/2 grains at the same fineness, so the ordinary coin is drawn on the face of the much larger disc. Hibler and Kappen mention supposed restrikes, often matte, with small differences such as a reverse fraction bar that starts from about the middle of the 9, where originals have it begin at the left.
