1896 Bryan Dollar HK-778, Tiffany, S-2
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
HK-778 (Schornstein 2) carries the same design as HK-777: a uniface silver piece, 49 mm, lettered in seven straight lines with the claim that 776 1/3 grains of nine-tenths silver equaled one gold dollar, dated July 1896. The difference is on the edge. Both have the incuse name Tiffany & Co., but here the words stretch to 13 1/2 mm, against 7 1/2 mm on an original HK-777. This page is an 1896 striking. Silversmiths in the East made pieces like this during the Bryan campaigns of 1896 and 1900, and Hibler and Kappen contrast their sober tone with the base-metal tokens of the day, which mostly mocked Bryan and free silver. Because they argue about the silver question directly, they bear on the national coinage as well as on politics.
