Description

Discovered in November 2023 by Brent Fogelberg, the 1894-S Morgan Dollar VAM-13 is cataloged at die pairing DPIS LH3/RE4. The obverse shows slightly doubled top of the e in we as a small spike — a subtle but confirmable doubling element. Lines in the wing-to-neck gap on the reverse serve as a die marker for this variety. Designated as having a "spectacular obverse die," VAM-13 shares its obverse die with VAM-1A and VAM-12, placing it in a well-documented obverse die group for the 1894-S date. The 1894-S Morgan Dollar is among the key San Francisco Mint issues for this era, struck in 90% silver. The November 2023 discovery date makes VAM-13 among the more recently confirmed attributions in the 1894-S VAM catalog, and its shared obverse connection to VAM-1A and VAM-12 provides important die lineage context for researchers.
