Description

Discovered in 2017 by Daniel Carr, the 1894-O VNA-B is classified as a privately made die-struck counterfeit with a normal date and medium O mint mark. The coin exhibits a rounded junction where the design meets the field, a characteristic hallmark of transfer-die counterfeits produced outside the official Mint. The obverse die matches that of 1894-O VNA-A, but the reverse die does not correspond to any previously reported privately made Morgan dollar. Neither coin appears related to the well-documented Micro O or medium O mint mark counterfeit series that has occupied researchers for decades, so no standard VAM number has been assigned. Researchers have noted that this coin, along with a 1900-O piece attributed to Brady Johnson, may eventually be shown to belong to one of the known counterfeit production runs as more specimens surface and die linkage studies progress. The existence of unlinked counterfeit die pairs underscores the complexity of Morgan dollar die analysis, where legitimate Mint products and privately manufactured pieces must be carefully separated through meticulous die study and provenance research.
