Error
Description
Discovered by John Coxe in February 2011, VAM-11A of the 1894-O Morgan dollar carries the classification 11A III2 8 - C3a from die pair 181. Described as "Low Date, Doubled 8, Denticle Impressions O Mint Mark, Clashed Obverse D," this variety packs multiple diagnostic features into a single die pair. The obverse shows a clashed die with an incuse partial top of the letter D visible below the left bottom of the I in PLURIBUS, a remnant transferred from the reverse during a planchet-free die strike. The low date position, doubled 8, and distinctive denticle impressions around the O mint mark provide additional attribution points beyond the clash marks. VAM-11A exemplifies the richly layered varieties that make New Orleans Morgan dollars from the 1890s such fertile ground for die study and attribution work among dedicated VAM collectors.
