Description
A minor die clash on both sides characterizes this 1893 Indian Head Cent, with the obverse showing the letter C and left wreath transferred from the reverse die along with minor clashing in the feather area. On the reverse, the full front of Liberty's portrait from the obverse is clashed onto the die surface. Compared to full-clash examples, this specimen shows lighter transfer — the C and wreath elements are identifiable but less bold than on coins where the dies struck each other with maximum force. Die clashing occurs when the obverse and reverse dies contact each other without a planchet between them, impressing incuse images of each die's design onto the opposing face. James B. Longacre's Indian Head design, struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), features Liberty's portrait and wreath elements in sufficient relief that clashing transfers recognizable design features. The 1893 Indian Head Cent was produced exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint. The classification as "Minor" distinguishes this from stronger clashes where transferred detail covers more of the die face with greater depth of impression. Compared to the stronger die clash also known for this year, this example shows less extensive obverse clash marks with only minor feather involvement, suggesting it may be from a different die pair or an earlier clash event on the same die.
