1892-CC VAM-4B

Description

Discovered by Michael Ash in March 2007, VAM-4B of the 1892-CC Morgan dollar is designated III2 1 - C3c as CC/CC Down, Multiple Clashed n, Die Break Reverse, from die pair (177). The CC mintmark is repunched downward (CC/CC), creating a doubled mintmark visible under magnification. The reverse C3c die shows a tilted field die break at the top of the right S in STATES and a beveled bar at the top edge of the wing below IN. These reverse features distinguish VAM-4B from its predecessor, VAM-4A, of which it represents the late die state. The LDS relationship means VAM-4B specimens were struck after the die acquired the break at STATES and the beveled bar that VAM-4A lacks. The 1892-CC Morgan dollar was produced at the Carson City Mint with a mintage of just 1,352,000, making it one of the lower-mintage dates in the series. Carson City Morgan dollars command collector premiums across all VAM attributions, and the combination of a repunched CC mintmark with progressive reverse die failure documented across the 4A-to-4B sequence adds numismatic interest.
