Error
Description
A slanted date with the open 2 appreciably higher than the 1, combined with a CC mintmark tilted left with the second C touching the wreath, define VAM-11 for the 1892-CC Carson City Morgan Dollar, catalogued III24 C3b: Slanted Date, CC Tilted Left. The same obverse die class featuring the slanted date is shared with VAM-7, but VAM-11's date is set slightly further right — a distinction that differentiates these two slanted-date Carson City varieties under magnification. Discovered by Larry Briggs in April 2000, VAM-11 adds to the documented population of 1892-CC varieties. Carson City Morgan Dollars command strong collector premiums across all VAM varieties; 1892-CC is a scarce date with lower total mintage than many earlier CC issues, making any attributed variety specimen a meaningful numismatic holding. The 1892-CC Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Carson City Mint — Nevada's storied frontier-era mint — under George T. Morgan's design, in the penultimate year before the Carson City Mint ceased silver dollar production.
