Named VAM Discovery of the Year for 2016, this 1892 Carson City Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-2A was discovered by Nathaniel Mailliard and stands as one of the most significant recent additions to the Carson City VAM catalog. Cataloged as III2 1, C3b (CC Tilted Left, Rim Cud UR), the variety combines a leftward tilt of the CC mint mark with a rim cud above UR in PLURIBUS. The obverse is III2 1, showing the initial stage of the cud as a die crack running rim to rim above UR in PLURIBUS, with the cud developing progressively across die states. Carson City Morgan Dollars are among the most avidly collected coins in American numismatics — the Nevada mint operated from 1870 to 1893, and its limited production runs make CC-mint varieties especially prized. The tilted CC mint mark indicates the mint mark punch was applied at a slight angle, a common diagnostic on hand-punched CC mint marks. Mailliard's identification of this combination of tilted mint mark and rim cud earned the premier annual recognition from the VAM community, affirming its importance within the already prestigious 1892-CC issue.
