Description

Discovered in 2015 by Lance Newman of the Online Coin Club (OCC), the 1890-O VAM-1J Morgan Dollar documents a reverse die marker consisting of two long and two short horizontal die scratches at the right outside of the eagle's left leg. The VAM classification III 2 1 - C3a (Die Scratches Eagle's Left Leg) (181) identifies this as a die-marker-defined sub-variety, where the die scratches serve as the primary attribution feature rather than a hub doubling or positional variant. Die scratches on Morgan Dollar dies could result from various causes: handling during die preparation, polishing attempts to extend die life, or accidental contact with tools during die installation in the press. The specific pattern — two long horizontal scratches flanked by two shorter ones at the eagle's left leg — creates a distinctive signature that distinguishes this die from all other 1890-O reverse dies. The New Orleans Mint produced 10,701,000 Morgan Dollars in 1890, a substantial mintage that generated numerous die pairs.
