Description

Discovered by Martin Field in October 1978, the 1890-O VAM-12 features a doubled O mint mark with the original punch position showing at the top inside and bottom outside of the letter — a diagnostic pattern described as O/O Down, indicating the first impression was placed higher than the final position, with the downward shift creating visible remnants of the initial placement. The reverse is classified as C3f, specifically distinguishing this doubled mint mark configuration from other O positions, while the obverse uses a Type III2 die 1. Doubled mint marks on Morgan Dollars represent one of the most visually engaging variety categories, as the two superimposed O impressions create a distinctively thickened or shadowed appearance that is often identifiable under moderate magnification. The specific "top inside and bottom outside" residual pattern tells the story of the mint mark's movement: the first punch was delivered, then repositioned lower, leaving its original impression partially visible within and around the final O. Martin Field's 1978 discovery contributed to the expanding documentation of New Orleans Mint mint mark positioning varieties. The 1890-O Morgan Dollar was produced at the New Orleans Mint during the later years of Morgan Dollar production, and doubled mint marks from this facility continue to be among the most actively collected VAM categories.
