1889 Repunched Date WRPD-001

Description

The first repunched date documented for the 1889 Liberty Head Nickel, WRPD-001 displays repunching to the west on both loops of the second 8 in the date — described as "188/89," indicating the last two digits were repunched during die preparation. Repunched dates on Liberty Head Nickels are scarce compared to later series, as the smaller collector base for this denomination has historically meant fewer researchers examining dies for positional anomalies. The westward repunching on the 8's loops creates a thickened, displaced secondary impression best observed under magnification. No die markers have been identified on either side — all marker fields note "None visible" — and the attribution service has flagged that better examples are needed to fully document this die's diagnostics. Charles Barber's Liberty Head Nickel was struck from 1883 through 1912, and the 1889 issue saw 15.88 million pieces at Philadelphia.
