Description

This 1888 Indian Head Cent displays a strike-through error on the obverse, featuring a greater-than-sign-shaped depression visible west of the letter E in AMERICA. The angular, chevron-like shape of this incuse impression suggests a small piece of rigid material — possibly a metal shaving, wire fragment, or broken tooling debris — became trapped between the obverse die and the planchet during the striking process. When the dies came together under several hundred tons of pressure, the foreign object was pressed into the coin's surface, leaving a permanent impression of its shape before being dislodged or carried away. Strike-through errors are distinct from die varieties because they are planchet-level events rather than die-level anomalies: each strike-through is unique to the individual coin that encountered the foreign material, unlike doubled dies or repunched mintmarks that repeat on every coin struck by the affected die. The greater-than-sign shape's angular precision — with two straight legs meeting at a defined vertex — indicates the foreign object had rigid structure rather than being soft or fibrous material, which would have produced a more diffuse or organic impression pattern. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, featuring Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse and an oak wreath with shield on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1888, the coin is composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19 mm diameter. The 1888 date had a mintage of approximately 37.5 million pieces. Strike-through errors on Indian Head Cents from this era provide tangible evidence of the working conditions inside the 19th-century Philadelphia Mint.
