Description
Spanning from the 9 o'clock to 10:30 position on the reverse, this pre-cud on the 1888 Indian Head Cent captures the penultimate stage of die deterioration before a full rim cud would have formed. A pre-cud represents the critical moment when die cracks have propagated to the rim and begun to outline a section of die metal that is weakening but has not yet separated from the die face — the structural precursor to the catastrophic break that produces a full cud's raised, featureless mass. On this specimen, the die crack extends along the rim through the upper left area of the reverse, running through portions of James B. Longacre's oak and laurel wreath design. The extent of the crack — covering approximately 45 degrees of the reverse circumference from 9 o'clock to 10:30 — indicates a substantial zone of die fatigue, suggesting that relatively few additional strikes would have been needed before the contained section fully separated. The 1888 Indian Head Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19 mm. Philadelphia's 1888 mintage of 37,489,832 cents required many working dies, and die crack progression through normal production wear is well-documented across the Indian Head Cent series. Pre-cuds occupy a special niche in error collecting because they document the die failure process in its intermediate stage, offering collectors a sequential narrative of die life when paired with earlier crack-only examples and later full cud specimens from the same working die.
