Description

This variety has been eliminated from the active VAM catalog as a duplicate listing of VAM-33. Originally discovered in 2013 by Wali Motorwalla, the 1885-P VAM-9F was classified as 9F III2 9 - C3a, described as a far date placement with a clashed obverse showing a faint partial incuse "n" from the reverse inscription "In" next to Liberty's neck. The clash impression sits slightly lower than on VAM-9C, which was one of the distinguishing factors in the original listing. A curved, thread-like die impression in front of the eye served as the primary die marker for attribution. Despite its elimination, the VAM-9F entry remains instructive as an example of how the VAM cataloging system self-corrects over time. When further study revealed this to be the same die pair already cataloged as VAM-33, the duplicate listing was retired. Collectors who previously attributed coins to VAM-9F should reclassify them under VAM-33 for accurate record-keeping in their Morgan Dollar collections. Die clash slightly lower than VAM 9C.
