Description

=1885-P VAM-10 Doubled 5= Discovered by Oscar Simpson, March 1977. Revised 2015 Eliminated August 2025, superseded by VAM 39 10 (revised) III2 10 - C3a (Doubled 5) Obverse III2 10 - 5 doubled across the top. Date set in the middle of normal tolerance. There is a small vertical mark on tenth denticle right of the neck index point. ''Die marker'' - Some pitting at top and left outside of ear. DPIS - RE3/C5 ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Superseded by VAM 39 # The doubling on the 5 tapers down from left to right and has a steeper cut on the outside top corner of 5 as shown by arrow on plate. # Date placement is different than that of the 1885-P VAM-2 and 1885-P VAM-11. # Early specimens show the C3B reverse features. # When LVA first listed this VAM (1977) no attention was granted to "water drop" marks so they were not mentioned. Chris Simpson noted said "water drops" on an example and the 1885-P VAM-39 was made. At that point in time - no attention was paid to the doubled flag of the 5. All eyes were on the extraordinary "water drop" marks this particular VAM exhibits. (I suspect we will find out that the water drop marks were made from scaling during the annealing process of die production). (The world according to Brent).
