Description
The 1883 Proof Hawaiian Half Dollar is a presentation-quality striking of the Hapalua, produced in minute quantities at the San Francisco Mint as part of the proof component of King Kalakaua’s silver coinage program. At 30.6mm in diameter, the proof half dollar offers the most dramatic visual impact of any denomination below the dollar, with Barber’s designs rendered in stunning detail against deeply reflective mirror fields. The proof half dollar showcases a particularly impressive version of the Hawaiian coat of arms reverse. At this larger scale, the heraldic composition achieves its full visual potential: the warrior and kahili bearer flanking the crowned shield, the taro and banana leaves adorning the quartered arms, and the flowing motto banner are all struck with meticulous precision. On proof strikings, the fine cross-hatching within the shield quadrants — nearly invisible on business strikes — becomes clearly visible, demonstrating the extraordinary die-cutting skill that Barber brought to this commission. The creation of proof Hawaiian coins represented a significant investment in prestige for the kingdom. The San Francisco Mint would have needed to allocate special attention to the proof production, polishing dies by hand and selecting flawless planchets — work performed for a foreign government in what was an unusual arrangement by the standards of the era. The half dollar proof exists in a very small surviving population. Auction tracking and census data suggest a total of twenty to fifty pieces across all conditions. Examples in superb gem preservation with deep cameo contrast are of the highest rarity and value.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Estimated proof mintage between 20 and 50 pieces. The half dollar proof is one of the most visually impressive Hawaiian coins. Gem examples with deep cameo contrast are extremely rare.
