Description

The 1883 Proof Hawaiian Dime is a specially struck presentation-quality version of the Umi Keneta, produced in very limited quantities alongside the regular business strike production at the San Francisco Mint. These proof coins were created using polished dies and planchets, struck with extra pressure to bring up every detail of Charles E. Barber’s intricate design, resulting in coins with mirror-like fields and razor-sharp devices. Proof Hawaiian dimes were produced for distribution to dignitaries, government officials, and important visitors to the kingdom as numismatic gifts befitting Hawaii’s diplomatic ambitions. Kalakaua, who traveled extensively and maintained relationships with heads of state around the world, understood the diplomatic value of fine coinage. Presentation proof sets of the 1883 Hawaiian series would have been appropriate gifts in the royal courts of Europe and Asia that Kalakaua visited during his famous 1881 world tour — the first circumnavigation of the globe by a reigning monarch. The proof dime displays the same design elements as its business-strike counterpart: Kalakaua’s portrait obverse and the Hawaiian coat of arms reverse. However, the proof striking reveals details that are often lost on circulation strikes — the fine texturing of the king’s uniform, the individual strands of the kahili feathers, and the delicate engraving of the motto banner are all rendered with crystalline clarity. No official mintage figure for the proof dimes has been established, but numismatic researchers estimate the total at between twenty and fifty pieces based on auction appearances and collection inventories.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. Estimated proof mintage of 20-50 pieces. Auction appearances are infrequent and command strong premiums over business strikes.
