PC-5c-1883-15 Pre-Cud
Error
Description
Fifteenth pre-cud documented for the 1883 Liberty Head Nickel with CENTS by the Cuds on Coins attribution service, PC-5c-1883-15 adds to an already substantial catalog of die rim failures for this historically significant nickel variety. Charles Barber's Liberty Head nickel debuted in 1883, initially without the word CENTS on the reverse — an omission famously exploited by con artists who gold-plated the nickel-sized coins and passed them as five-dollar gold pieces. The Mint quickly added CENTS to the reverse design mid-year, creating the "With CENTS" variety that continued through the series' end in 1912. Philadelphia struck approximately 16.03 million "With CENTS" nickels in 1883, and the accumulation of fifteen documented pre-cuds for this single date speaks to the extensive die consumption and the ongoing challenges the Mint faced with the relatively hard nickel alloy. Pre-cuds represent the earliest visible stage of die rim deterioration — a crack has formed in the die steel extending from or near the rim but has not yet progressed to the point where the fractured section begins to separate and sink below the die surface. On struck coins, a pre-cud manifests as a fine raised line extending from the rim into the design field, tracing the path of the underlying die crack. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition that had been used since the Shield nickel's introduction in 1866 continued to demand higher striking pressures than traditional copper or precious-metal denominations, accelerating die wear and rim failure rates. Fifteen documented pre-cuds for a single date indicate either a systematic die quality issue or reflect the sheer volume of dies consumed during production, with each die pair eventually developing rim stress fractures. Collectors should examine the rim perimeter under at least 10x magnification, looking for fine raised lines extending inward from the rim edge that indicate the pre-cud crack location.
