Description
Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as SHD-5c-1883-02R, this is the second reverse shattered die it lists for the 1883 Liberty Head nickel, on the first type of the year, struck without the word CENTS on the reverse. A shattered die is the last stage of die failure: cracks run across the face of the die and join into a web, and every coin it strikes carries that web as raised lines. The R in the designation marks a reverse die. Philadelphia struck 5,474,300 No CENTS nickels in 1883 before CENTS was added to the reverse later that year. Liberty Head nickels were designed by Charles E. Barber and struck from 1883 through 1912.
