SHD-50c-1854-01 Shattered Die
Error
Description
First documented shattered die variety for the 1854 Seated Liberty Half Dollar, SHD-50c-1854-01 records a die that developed such extensive cracking that the die face fractured into multiple interconnected segments — the most severe classification of die failure in the Cuds on Coins catalog system. A shattered die exhibits a network of cracks covering most or all of the die face, producing a web-like pattern of raised lines across the struck coin that distinguishes it from individual die cracks or even bisecting cracks. The 1854 Seated Liberty Half Dollar was struck during the California Gold Rush era, when discoveries of gold in the west were transforming American monetary policy and leading to revisions in the weight and fineness of silver coinage. The Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht had been in use on half dollars since 1839, and the 1854 date falls in the period after the Act of February 21, 1853, which reduced the weight of subsidiary silver coins to prevent their export and melting — a measure that directly affected half dollar specifications. Dies for the 1854 half dollar were produced at the Philadelphia Mint using mid-nineteenth-century steelmaking technology, which produced dies less uniform and potentially more brittle than modern die steel. First cataloged on December 1, 2015 with a correction noted on June 13, 2022, by Cuds on Coins, this shattered die provides a dramatic example of terminal die failure on a pre-Civil War silver coin. Shattered dies on Seated Liberty half dollars are uncommon in documented catalogs.
