Description

Representing the terminal stage of die failure, SHD-5c-1883-01R records the first cataloged reverse shattered die on the 1883 Liberty Head nickel without CENTS, as Cuds on Coins lists it. A shattered die represents the terminal stage of die deterioration, far beyond the pre-cud and retained cud stages: the die face has developed such extensive cracking that the surface is fractured into multiple fragments creating a web or network of raised lines across the struck coin's surface. The designation follows the standard format: SHD for shattered die, 5c for the nickel denomination, 1883 for the date, and 01R indicating the first reverse shattered die cataloged for this issue. Philadelphia struck 5,474,300 No CENTS nickels in 1883 before CENTS was added to the reverse. The 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy, used for five-cent pieces since the Shield nickel of 1866, imposed substantial stress on working dies, and by 1883 the Mint had seventeen years of experience managing die longevity for this hard composition. A shattered reverse die suggests this particular die was kept in service well past the point where normal quality control would have prompted replacement, pushing the die steel to catastrophic failure. The network of raised crack lines on struck specimens from shattered dies creates a distinctively dramatic visual appearance that makes these varieties among the most visually striking in the die break hierarchy.
