Description

On the 1883 Liberty Head "No CENTS" nickel — one of American numismatics' most storied coins — this Wexler-attributed repunched date variety shares the WRPD-002 designation with an identically numbered Shield nickel variety from the same year. The Liberty Head design debuted in 1883 with its reverse displaying only the Roman numeral V and no denomination in words. Enterprising individuals quickly gold-plated the nickel-sized coins and passed them as five-dollar gold pieces, prompting the Mint to add CENTS to the reverse partway through the year. The "No CENTS" variety thus represents only the earliest portion of 1883 Liberty Head production. WRPD-002 shows repunching south on the 1 and 8 with westward displacement on the lower 3, matching the same diagnostic overlap documented on the Shield nickel counterpart.
