Description

Sixteenth distinct variety in the 1882 nickel pattern series, struck after the design had advanced significantly toward its final form. This pattern may represent one of the revised configurations that Barber prepared in response to Treasury Secretary Folger's rejection of the J-1690 design. Folger's objection — that UNITED STATES OF AMERICA must appear on the reverse — forced Barber to rearrange the legends, moving the national inscription from the obverse to the reverse and relocating the stars to maintain visual balance. The process of accommodating Folger's demand while preserving the design's aesthetic integrity required several additional pattern strikings, each testing a different legend arrangement. President Chester Arthur confirmed Folger's decision, despite Snowden's argument that an exception should be made, ensuring that the redesign proceeded. Struck in copper-nickel, this variety captures one moment in the post-rejection redesign process.
