Description

Fourteenth variety in the 1882 Liberty Head Nickel pattern series. By this point in the sequence, Barber had moved into the latter phase of design exploration, testing variations that were closer to the final adopted design. The obverse may feature the configuration that would become the production coin: Liberty Head facing left with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA replacing the earlier arrangement of thirteen stars, or a transitional layout combining elements of earlier and later designs. The reverse V-in-wreath treatment continues to evolve, with the cotton and wheat wreath becoming increasingly standardized across varieties. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this pattern represents a mature stage in the design development process. The progression from J-1675 through the high Judd numbers tracks Barber's gradual convergence on the design that would eventually satisfy both the Mint's aesthetic standards and the Treasury Department's legal requirements.
